Jahrom charcoal is one of the best available charcoals because of its production process. The unique characteristics of the process are:

  1. Avoiding using fossil fuels
  2. Avoiding burning woods directly
  3. Using rice bran

First, the wood is piled carefully in the following dimensions: 1.10 ~ 1.50 m (H) x 1.5 ~ 2 m (W) x 10 ~ 12 m (L). (Figure 1)

Then the wood pile is fully covered with a layer of rice ban with a thickness of 10 ~ 20 cm. Then, hot ashes (made from burning the same rice ban in another place) put on the rice ban on some spots to burn gradually. (Figure 2)

Burning rice ban results in hot ashes that cover the whole “natural” kiln. (Figure 3)

It takes two days for part of the wood that is in direct contact with hot ashes to become charcoal. Then this primary part of ready charcoal is taken out from the kiln (Figure 4). The rest of charcoal is taken out from kiln on a daily basis and it takes 10 to 20 days for the whole wood pile to turn into charcoal.

Charcoal taken out of kiln put into metal containers (16 kg oil tins) that are placed on the ground upside down. The containers are covered with dry soil allowing no air to enter. It takes seven hours for charcoal to get cool and ready for packing. (Figure 5)
